ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP
Membership in AMSSM is exclusive, but not restricted. All who qualify will be welcomed. Those who fall short of the membership criteria are encouraged to participate in AMSSM and other sports medicine educational meetings to develop a stronger involvement in sports medicine. The AMSSM is not for those who are “just interested” in sports medicine. AMSSM is for the physician significantly involved in sports medicine – those recognized in their communities as “sports medicine physicians”.
Please review the criteria found on the back of the membership application. If you feel you have the requisite points – 25 for full member status, 15 for associate member status, complete the application, return it or submit it on line with your dues payment and a copy of your most recent curriculum vitae. The AMSSM membership committee will review your application and promptly inform you of your status.

ORIGIN AND PURPOSE
The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) was formed in 1991 to fill a void that has existed in sports medicine from its earliest beginnings. The founders, who are among the most recognizable and expert providers of primary care sports medicine, realized that while there are several physician organizations which support sports medicine, there was not a forum specific for non-surgical sports medicine physicians – until now.
The AMSSM was formed to fill that void to offer a forum for the sports medicine physician. Over and over again the most compelling reason for the formation of the AMSSM is to foster a collegial relationship among dedicated, competent sports medicine physicians with a common base of expertise.
In 1992, the AMSSM opened membership to qualified sports medicine physicians from other specialties. Affiliate membership is available to specialists (i.e. orthopedists, radiologists, surgeons, etc.) who qualify under the same point criteria system. Affiliate member carries all the benefits as Regular membership with the exception of voting and serving on the Board of Directors.
