EDUCATION COMMITTEE
education@amssm.org

Education Committee Chair - Holly Benjamin, MD
Chair Elect - Sean Bryan, MD
Vice Chair - Mark Stovak, MD

I. The mission of the Education Committee is to support the AMSSM as the premier educational resource for sports medicine physicians.

Committee Functions:

  1. Committee members will work provide the highest quality educational content for the AMSSM annual meetings.  Participation can include, but is not limited to, opportunities to serve on the program committee, as a faculty member and as a presenter.
  2. The Education committee will oversee the clinical case slide and poster sessions for the annual meeting including the performance of blinded case reviews on an annual basis.
  3. The committee will actively look for opportunities to create new educational forums that further the advancement of the field of sports medicine.
  4. Members of the committee will liaison with other AMSSM committees such as publications, public relations, fellowship and research such that all educational opportunities might be acted upon in the best interest of AMSSM and its members.
  5. The committee will work to create educational curriculums that reflect current sports medicine standards of care that can be utilized in primary specialty residency training programs and/or medical student education.
  6. The committee will be an open committee where all members are welcome to serve 3 year renewable terms provided that they actively participate in the ongoing functions.

 AMSSM Education Committee Description

Membership Requirements (adopted 2004)

  1. Active member of AMSSM
  2. 3 year terms
  3. Review cases/222’s for 2 out of 3 years to maintain membership
  4. Failure to fulfill the review requirement will result loss of membership on the education committee.  Should this occur, the member will be notified in writing by the Committee Chair.

Terms (adopted 2004; revised 2008) - no absolute limitations were placed on length of terms for serving on the Education Committee. However, in general it was recommended:

  1. After completion of 2nd full consecutive term (not including partial terms), a member would be encouraged (but not required) to join a different AMSSM committee
    1. For members in good standing, the chair of the Education Committee should contact the chair of the committees in which the member is interested in transferring to, in order to facilitate the process.
    2. Encourage networking

Executive Committee Composition and Responsibilities

  1. Committee chair
    1. Serves as an active board member.
    2. Organize and supervise blinded review process for clinical cases and 222’s for the Annual Meeting.
    3. Select moderator(s) and panelists from the education committee membership for the clinical case session at the annual meeting.
    4. Monitor education projects and create appropriate subcommittees to work on various projects.
    5. Prepare summary reports biannually for board meetings.
    6. Actively participate in strategic planning tasks.
    7. Prepare quarterly reports for committee members.
    8. Maintain a complete roster of active committee members that is updated at least biannually.
    9. Maintain a list that is updated annually of active committee members.  Members who have failed to meet minimal membership requirements will be contacted by the chair in writing and excused from the committee.  A copy of such communications will be sent to the President and the Executive Director.
    10. Send thank-you letters to committee members who actively participate in the review process for the annual meeting and/or other committee functions.
  2. Vice-chair – appointed by the committee chair for a two year term
    1. Is a non-board member
    2. Will have served on the education committee previously
    3. Facilitate transitions for incoming Committee chairs (who are elected board members)
    4. Oversee the subcommittees, maintain communications and prepare subcommittee reports to the chair on a quarterly basis
    5. A maximum of 2 consecutive terms are recommended
  3. Past education committee chair(s)
    1. Provide support and advice for chair
    2. Assist in decision-making requiring immediate action

Annual Meeting Preparation (Chair)

  1. Review cases for annual meeting. (a case load of approximately 30 cases and all the 222’s seems to work well such that each case has approximately 7-8 reviews)
  2. As soon as cases are submitted – review for possible conflict of interests with reviewers
  3. Create a list randomly distributing the cases to the reviewers. Avoid having the same set of reviewers handle each case (i.e. don’t assign reviewers A-H cases 1-30 and reviewers I-P cases 31-60 etc…)
  4. Create score sheets for the reviews
  5. Set a deadline for reviews
  6. Approximately 1 week before the deadline e-mail the entire group reminding them of the deadline
  7. After the deadline e-mail late individual reviewers
  8. Compile raw scores
  9. Calculate mean overall score
  10. Calculate normalization factors (each individual’s correction to the mean – this should bring the individual reviewers mean to the overall mean)
  11. Normalize all the scores
  12. Rank the cases
  13. Find out how many cases will be accepted of slide presentation
  14. Review the cases (entire membership) – if 2 are relatively similar assign into different groups
    1. If 3 or more are very similar call your executive council (you, vice-chair and past chair) if all agree they are very similar drop lowest ranked case into poster poll and promote next case.
  15. Send groups to Jody
  16. Thank reviewers and send feedback – i.e. the overall average and individual averages
  17. Summarize selection process and stats for annual meeting brochure
  18. Finalize panelists and moderator(s) for the annual meeting clinical case sessions.
    1. Helpful hints:
      1. Try to pick chairs out of the group which have been panelists before
      2. Avoid picking individuals who are serving on other panels or making other presentations at the Annual meeting
      3. Try to get a relatively diverse group on each panel (as far as practice type etc.)
  1. Revaluate the review process for the annual meeting forum at least every 2 years
  2. Create an agenda for the annual meeting
    1. E-mail subcommittee chairs to remind them to be ready and have them e-mail their reports for the annual committee meeting
    2. E-mail an agenda (+ reports) to committee members before the annual meeting
